Sports Medicine & Lameness
Colts Head Veterinary Services offers a thorough work-up for your lame horse. Our experienced veterinarians will analyze your horse’s gait in hand and under saddle over a variety of surfaces. Your veterinarian will palpate the affected limb to detect sensitive structures and use hoof testers to localize lameness originating from the foot. Flexion tests (flexing a limb for a set period of time and then observing the horse’s movement) and diagnostic nerve or joint blocks (the use of local anesthesia to numb a region or joint) further localize the lameness.

Our practice is equipped with portable diagnostic tools including digital radiography and digital ultrasound.

Once the lameness diagnosis has been made, Colts Head Veterinary Services offers many cutting edge treatment options, including joint injections, shockwave therapy, Tildren, mesotherapy, and regenerative therapies such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), IRAP (Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein), and stem cells. The practice also offers alternative therapies including acupuncture and chiropractic evaluations, which can help diagnose and treat lameness. Our veterinarians also manage laminitis cases and will work with you and your farrier to treat this potentially devastating disease.
