Wellness & Preventative Care
At Colts Head Veterinary Services, we believe prevention is the best medicine. From customized vaccine and deworming programs to annual wellness, oral exams and dentistry, we can help keep your horse healthy. We perform an annual wellness exam when we administer your horse’s encephalitis and tetanus vaccine in the spring. This exam includes a body condition assessment, auscultation of heart and lungs, and auscultation for sand in the GI tract. During this exam, we also assess your horse for risk of Cushing’s disease and Equine Metabolic Syndrome, and can make nutritional recommendations.

A Coggins test is a blood test for equine infectious anemia. This is a fatal disease for which there is no cure or vaccine. Most states require Coggins testing. The State of New Jersey requires a Coggins test on every horse every two years, though most competitive horses have an annual Coggins test performed to meet horse show requirements. Interstate health certificates are required for horses traveling out of state. These certificates are valid for thirty days after the exam. When traveling out of state, we recommend checking the state’s test and health certificate requirements, as they can vary. Colts Head Veterinary Services performs digital Coggins tests and interstate health certificates.
